15. Lecidea atrobrunnea [black-brown].
A very common species growing on granitic rocks. The brown thallus areoles contrast with the black apothecia, which have a narrow black rim (proper margin or exciple). When well developed, the thallus also has a narrow black border (prothallus), which consists only of fungus tissue, forming a leading edge for future growth. Ranges from the outer foothills up into the alpine tundra.

16. Cetraria islandica [of Iceland].
An unattached brown, erect foliose lichen with many marginal ''spines". The underside is pale tan, and has irregular blotches (pseudocyphellae) where the cortex is lacking. The thallus is very brittle when dry, as are so many foliose lichens, but when wet it can be squeezed tightly, releasing some of its moisture but not being injured. Abundant on alpine tundra but occurring at lower altitudes on north-facing slopes of ravines.
