This "green
parmelia" is densely isidiate, and the underside is pale brown to
brown. The apothecia of Xanthoparmelia are large, brown,
with a thalline margin. What we call X mexicana is probably
a complex of several species or at least chemical
strains. |

An
unattached foliose lichen with long lobes that are convolute
(rolled from edge to edge). Apothecia are unknown. This plant rolls
around free on the ground of prairies and open grasslands, often
collecting in windrows. It occurs by the thousands and can be
scooped up by handfuls. It is supposedly toxic to sheep. Possibly
identical to X chlorochroa. |
