7. Letharia
vulpina [of foxes; this was used to poison animals]. |
A stiffly
fruticose chartreuse green lichen occurring on bark and wood of
conifers, particularly cedars. The thallus is angular, and the tips
of the branches are black; soredia occur where the cortex is
broken. Apothecia are unknown in America and in northern Eurasia
where the species spread rapidly after the Ice Ages. |

8.
Xanthoria elegans [elegant]. |
Very
abundant on rocks and cliffs, especially around hunting perches and
seepage lines below rodent latrines (tolerant of or requiring
nitrogenous compounds). A streak of Xanthoria elegans can
usually be followed up the rock to a deposit of animal scat. In
areas of very high rainfall, the lichen may only be found where
large accumulations of animal scat and urine deposits occur, such
as the bird rocks off the coast of Scandinavia. |
