Here the
podetia are elongate, and have scattered squamules along their
lengths. Apothecia are brown, and are borne on narrow cup margins.
A close relative, C. gracilis, is distinguishable only by
chemical tests. Common on forest floors. |

Several
species of Cladonia produce podetia which terminate in deep
or shallow cups. This one has well-developed broad cups that are
filled with small green squamules, like eggs in a birds nest. The
apothecia are brown, and occur on the margins of the cups. Many
species do not produce cups, and their podetia may be slender
wands. Cladonia is an interesting but difficult group that
often requires chemical analysis for identification. |
