An unmistakable Cladonia in which the podetia are tiered, with flaring saucers arising at intervals along their lengths. A common species of forest floors.

26. Cladonia deformis [deformed].
A yellowish Cladonia (containing usnic acid) with an irregularly shaped, often slit and fissured, thallus covered with minute soredia. Two almost identical species occur, this one which does not fluoresce in short wave ultraviolet light, and C. sulphurina, which does.
