A curious
lichen that is really crustose or squamulose, but has a lower
cortex and a central umbilicus! The apothecia are orange or
yellow-orange, and the thallus is rigid and can easily be removed
from the rock with a penknife. In very sunny places the apothecia
are brightly colored, paler in the shade. Very common on granitic
rocks. Formerly known as L. rubina. |

Rhizoplaca (Lecanora) melanophthalma [black-eyed]. |

Very
similar to R. chrysoleuca and often growing alongside it on
granite boulders. Here the apothecia may be pale greenish-gray,
darkening to almost black. Rhizoplaca species differ from
other Lecanora-like lichens by being umbilicate rather than closely
attached to the substrate by the entire underside. The lower cortex
is often black, especially toward the margins. |
