Peltigera aphthosa [plentiful]. |
Peltigera is a foliose lichen with peculiar apothecia
that occur on the ends of the lobes, looking like brown tongues.
Most Peltigera have blue-green alga hosts, but this one has
green algae, hence the thallus is bright green when wet. But the
thallus also has small black lumps on the upper side that are
colonies of blue-green algae called cephalodia. So this is a
symbiosis involving at least three different symbionts! |

A foliose
lichen intermediate in size between the small Physcia types
and the large Parmelia types, usually occurring in mats of
mosses on rocks. The thallus is gray or brown, with a gray pruina,
bright green when wet. There are no soredia. Apothecia are
relatively uncommon, but when present usually are up to 5 mm broad
and have a lobed thalline rim. The underside is black. |
