Parmelia sulcata [furrowed]. |
Probably
the most common Parmelia, occurring mostly around the bases
of conifer trees but also on rocks and over mosses. The thallus is
gray, with thin cracks along the ridges; the underside is black,
with black rhizinae that are stiffly horizontally-branched like a
bottlebrush. |

58. Physcia
stellaris [star-shaped]. |
A rather
small foliose lichen growing on the bark of various trees. The
thallus is gray, with narrow convex lobes. The apothecia have black
disks with a gray thalline margin. Physcia is a genus with
many species, a few on bark but most of them on rocks. With a
little experience, the genus can be recognized by its aspect (or
Gestalt). |
