A large, much-branched, tough, lichen with long lobes with convex, inrolled branches. The underside is black, and the upper surface usually has many small black dots (the pycnidia). Apothecia are very large with dark brown disks and gray thalline margins; they are elevated on short branches. The lichen is common on dead branches of conifers.

60. Punctelia (Parmelia) hypoleucites [pale underneath].
This large gray foliose lichen is almost identical to Flavopunctelia except that its thallus lacks usnic acid, which would color the cortex green. The pseudocyphellae are usually conspicuous, and the underside is pale tan. Several species of Punctelia occur, some with soredia, some with isidia, some with black undersides.
