19. Peltigera rufescens [reddish].
This Peltigera is very common in dry forests. It never seems to produce apothecia, and the thallus is thick and rigid, gray-brown, the lobes with upturned margins. The algal layer is blue-green, hence the thallus does not become green when wet. A gray cobwebby weft occurs on the younger parts of the thallus. The underside has a network of raised veins, with white rhizines occurring along them.

A neat little Peltigera containing green algal cells, hence green when wet. The apothecia are circular, on the ends of the broad lobes. The underside of the thallus is white with conspicuous brown veins. Commonly occurring on naked soil banks along trails and forest roads.
