If you speak Spanish you will be able to read Portuguese and understand some, but certainly not all, of the spoken language. There are also slight similarities with written, but little with spoken, French. For most English-speakers, however, Portuguese, which has many nasal sounds, is not easy to follow.

Many Portuguese speak a second language, and most have the tolerance and courtesy to help resolve problems or queries. At the tourist offices and in virtually all hotels and many restaurants you will find the major European languages are spoken. Yet learning just a few simple words and phrases in Portuguese will certainly enhance your visit.
