38 | George Dyson, der die Computersysteme der fünfziger Jahre genau kennt, bemerkt, dass die Codes, die für einen Nuklearangriff entwickelt worden sind, bis heute ein »schwarzes Geheimnis« bleiben (persönliche Mitteilung). Die Frage ist, ob einem wohler dabei ist, dass ein Algorithmus die Entscheidung trifft oder ein Computer. Aus Sicht der Codes ist es etwas riskant zu behaupten, dass »Leviathan« die erste komplexe Mensch-Maschine-Software war. Gleichzeitig gab es mehrere andere Projekte, von denen die meisten mit der Luftverteidigung zu tun hatten. Die Arbeiten der »Whirlwind«-Gruppe in Massachusetts und das Projekt SAGE waren gewissermaßen der Überbau für Leviathan. Leviathan kam über den Laborstatus nicht wirklich hinaus, aber beeinflusste SAGE. Die Reste von SAGE und Leviathan finden sich heute beispielsweise in dem SABRE Reservierungssystem der Fluggesellschaften. |
