day of the dead
ÚÛ
THIS FESTIVE CAKE was inspired by the Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday celebrated in remembrance of passed loved ones. To honor them, people leave offerings such as sugar skulls or flowers at altars decorated with festive paper garlands made of papel picado. A traditional Mexican folk art commonly incorporated into religious and secular holiday decorations, papel picado (“perforated paper”) features patterns hand-cut from paper by local artisans. I re-created similar garlands in sugar. The little skull figures on the cake would typically resemble and honor the deceased.
