A swatch of 1960s-style wallpaper inspired this cake. Like the original source, it uses basic shapes to create nature-themed imagery; translating part of the pattern into abstract 3-D plants further enlivens the design.

Sugar paste sculpture can be molded in a multitude of ways. To create these mod-looking flowers, start by simply shaping a brown sugar paste ball on a hooked wire, then attach cupped circles around the base. To make the sugar paste leaves, follow the instructions on page 152, using a narrow leaf cutter. The flat motif on the bottom tier is fondant cut out in dots, lines, and leaves and arranged to look like a flower.
Not only can you be creative with sugar paste shapes to produce unusual designs, but you can also utilize different color schemes. Picking three unique, muted colors for this design allowed the shapes to become the focal point.
