beyond polka dots

WHEN AN EDITOR from a wedding magazine whom I work with closely asked me to design a cake involving polka dots, I couldn’t think of a better way to introduce a fresh interpretation of the commonly expected polka dot motif. This cake would also be a great alternative to the typical baby shower cake that has cut-out pink or blue fondant circles pasted all over it. These 3-D sugar paste circles are simple to create and bring a lively movement to a cake’s design.
This design could be created on a round cake, but the hexagon shape of the tiers shown here produces interesting shapes and shadows with the circles. Continuing the pattern upwards in the toppers creates the illusion that the circles are floating.
