Appendix B

Books, Magazines, and Appendix B Websites

Here is a short list of publications and websites where you may find answers and solutions to your gardening problems and issues.

Books and Magazines

Bagust, Harold. The Gardener’s Dictionary of Horticultural Terms. London: Cassell Publishers Limited, 1992. This is a thorough dictionary with an English (as in England) focus, so you’ll find words we don’t tend to use in the United States.

Brenzel, Kathleen Norris, ed. Sunset Western Garden Book. Palo Alto, CA: Sunset Publishing Group, 2001. Prof. Price consults this book when he has questions related to his San Diego garden.

Creasy, Rosalind. The Complete Book of Edible Landscaping. London: Periplus Publishing, 1982. Rosalind Creasy also has a series of books on specific edible gardens, including: Mexican (2000), Asian (2000), Italian (2001), Edible Flowers (1999), French (1999), and Edible Herbs (1999).

Lovejoy, Sharon. Sunflower Houses. Loveland, OH: Interweave Press, Inc., 1991. You’ll find whimsical and wonderful garden projects for children in this book. (I heard the author speak at a children’s gardening conference many years ago, and she was inspirational.) Find tepee plans, tips for growing a zucchini in a bottle, and a personalized pumpkin in this book, along with a lot of other great ideas.

Nick, Jean, M.A., and Fern Marshall Bradley. Growing Fruits and Vegetables Organically . Emmaus, PA: Rodale Press, 1994. This small book covers all the basic techniques you need to grow fruits and vegetables organically.

Sunset Book Editors. Vegetable Gardening Illustrated. Palo Alto, CA: Lane Publishing Company, 1987. This book contains basic, how-to information for growing vegetables and small fruits with good sections on raised beds and container gardening.

U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA’s Complete Guide to Home Canning. Mineola, NY: Dover Publications, 1999. This is a no-nonsense guide to putting up food. If you take a course at your local county extension office, chances are you’ll follow directions from this guide.

Waters, Marjorie. The Victory Garden Kids’ Book. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1988. This charming book has been around for a few years, but its approach to gardening couldn’t be more with it. My friend Alison Kennedy, who is the art director for the book, gave it to me when my kids were little. Its simple, step-by-step approach is just as helpful for grown-ups as it is for children.

Besides the various websites referenced in the chapters, here are others you’ll find useful as you plan, plant, and harvest your vegetable garden. A few others are just inspirational.
